John E. Favors '72 was an early Black student leader and co-founder of the Third World Center (now known as the Carl A. Fields Center). He went on to become one of the world's first African American Hindu gurus, ordained as His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Swami. An acclaimed spiritual teacher, author, and community organizer, he passed away from cancer in 2005.
